Step 1: Using any size sew one hexagon unit on every other side of the center hexagon. Pin carefully at the end of each segment and sew to the pin. Sew on the dotted lines only...
Step 2: Add a hexagon into each open space by starting at the outside point a. Sew to point b and pivot to c, then d. Backstitch at the end of each segment to ensure no open space at point b or c.
Note: To achieve sharp corners, put a pin at the end of the sewing line matching the front and back dotted lines. Sew to the pin; then move the pin to the next intersection and repeat.
Step 3: Sew outside units onto the flat edges as in Step 1.
Step 4: Fill in open spaces as in Step 2.
Field of Diamonds [back to top]
Sew four hexagons together for the center, then add 12 contrasting hexagons to make a Field of Diamonds.
Diamonds [back to top]
Step 1: Using any size sew three diamonds together. Then sew a second set of three together.
Step 2: Sew two units together. Be sure that there is no hole at the center.
Stars can be set together with diamonds, as in Seven Sisters.
Stars can also be set together with hexagons or diamonds.
Tumbling Blocks [back to top]
Step 1: Using any size diamonds sew two units together using BD or DD.
Step 2: Sew third diamond to complete the block. Be sure there is high contrast in colors.
Radiant Star [back to top]
Using any size diamond the Radiant Star pattern sets diamonds in circular rounds.
Star Points [back to top]
Step 1: Sew one star point onto every other side of the center hexagon. Pin carefully at the end of each segment and sew to the pin. Sew on the dotted lines only. Backstitch at the beginning and the end of each segment.
Step 2: Fill in the spaces by adding a star point into each open space, starting at the outside point a, Sew to point b. Pivot to c, then to d. Be sure to back stitch at the beginning and end of each side.
Stars can be set together with the D diamond stamp.
Stars can also be set together with the D hexagon stamp.
Star Flowers
Step 1: Sew six units together with points into the center.
Step 2: Sew B diamonds between each star point. When set together Tumbling Blocks are formed between each Star Flower.
Triangles [back to top]
1000 Pyramids
Triangles can be set together in rows as in 1000 pyramids. Other charm quilt patterns can be formed depending on color arrangements.
Trillium
Sew three BT triangles around a center BT triangle, then sew a DT triangle onto each side of the BT unit. This forms a Trillium Wildflower. Add a variety of greens to set the Trillium into a meadow.
Spider Web
Using 6 BD or DD triangles with 6 BHH or DHH half hexagons a Spider Web pattern is formed.
Chinese Checkers
Sew 6 B or D triangles around a center D hexagon to make Chinese Checkers. Hexagons complete the background.
Half Hexagons [back to top]
Inner City
Use two each light, medium and dark fabrics to make Inner City units. The units interlock to form a contemporary pattern.
Merry-Go-Round
Sew 6 DHH half hexagons around a D hexagon or BHH around a BH to make a Merry-Go-Round unit. This pattern will appear to spin across a quilt as the units interlock.
Sew a partial seam between arrow a and arrow b. Then add other half hexagons before finishing first (partial) seam.

Fans & Dresden Plates [back to top]
Fan
Step 1: Mark blades on the back of the fabric with the grain line in the center as shown. Sew blade units together into one-quarter of the circle. Sew on the dotted lines only leaving the quarter inch seam allowance open.
Step 2: To make the fan, turn under the top seam allowance and baste. Applique to a 7" or 8" (finished size) background block. Add a quarter circle for the center of the fan, if desired.
Dresden Plate
To make the full sized Dresden Plate using BDP, sew 16 blades together into a circle. Baste under the top seam allowance, then applique to the background. The full sized Dresden Plate fits on a 14" or 16" (finshed size) block. The center can be turned under and appliquéed, or a circle can be appliqueed over the center using a 3" finished circle.
To make the small Dresden Plate using ADP, sew 12 blades together in to a circle. Make a yo-yo to cover the center using a 2 3/4" circle. Applique to a 7" or 8" (finished size) background block.
Apple Core [back to top]
Stamp the Apple Core shape on back of the fabric with the grain in the center as shown. Clip in the center of both curves to make the edges fit together easier. Do not cut into the seam allowance. Place the outward/concave curve on top of the inward/convex curve. Using at least three straight pins, match the seams together and sew by backstitching, then a running stitch to the seams toward the convex curves.
Clam Shells [back to top]
Clip the curves to make edges fit into each other. Use several pins to align the edges.
LeMoyne Star [back to top]
Step 1: Sew four pairs of the long diamonds together. Then make two sets of four to make a half star. Sew the two halves together.
Step 2: Add the four squares to the corners and the four quarter-square triangles to the top and bottom and the two sides.
Stars can be set into a variety of blocks depending on the pieces used and the colors chosen. Below is a list of some of the blocks made from the three shapes used in the LeMoyne Star:
Carolina Lily -- Jackson Star -- Cactus Star -- Victory Star
Rolling Star -- Carpenter's Wheel -- Hands All Round
Glowing Star -- Lemon Star -- Arrowhead Star
and many more...
